Mortenson and Relin convey the theme that individualism would make the journey of turning one mans hardships into another's opportunities impossible because one needs to work FOR the other party, with many people, and keep an open mind.

ReplyDeleteKrakauers Into the Wild examines the power of individualism, through Chris McCandless' journey into the Alaskan wilderness.
ReplyDeleteKrakauer believes that individualism is essential in one's life, and he develops this theme not only through McCandless' mindset, but also through McCandless' mistakes and maturity throughout his life.
ReplyDeleteChris McCandless tramps all around America, and into Canada and Mexico, to show that individualism is important and to show how people should be adventurous, but in the end shows that he had made a large mistake of taking finding himself to too much of an extreme.

ReplyDeleteThe novel brings out the two characteristics of courage and being opinionated in Chris as a way to demonstrate that individualism helps one find a path to peace and happiness the way he did when he walked into the wilderness of Alaska.

Krakauer does so by comparing and contrasting his attitude with others who acted similarly, describing how he personally relates to the subject, and presenting individual testimony to the effect that, "Alex" had on those around him.

ReplyDeleteHis experiences with Wayne Westerberg and Ronald Franz are both evidence that McCandless was not crazy; he simply wanted to live in an environment that he felt was right for him as an individual.
ReplyDeleteThis message in the novel is that individualism and the lifestyle that comes along with it, can be appealing to many, but in fact is a dangerous way of life. Krakauer demonstrates this by showing Chris's desire to isolate himself from the responsibilities and bonds of society and then showing the detrimental effects of Chris's isolation.
