  1. America is fortunate enough to not be in Europe but still be capable of competition with the major European nations. For a few decades we have been able to define ourselves as the strongest country, probably because the last war we fought on our soil was the civil war, a century and a half ago. However, economic woes in recent years have put us into debt as China replaces America in might. We can no longer define ourselves as the best, as we no longer are. Near the nation's founding, we were the rustic, resourceful people who either immigrated to the colonies for the thrill or had nothing to lose, but this is no longer an accurate description of America's identity. In Western Europe we are the fat, lazy slobs who keep showing up late to major wars. In many places, however, we are viewed as the land of opportunity with a non-oppressive government and an economic system that allows one to go from rags to riches. This generally proves to be slightly inaccurate when they actually immigrate, and most end up doing menial or physically trying labor for the rest of their lives. Instead I think that America is simply a country of multi-ethnic culture. Our reputation as the country where the streets are paved with gold has lad to enormous immigration, and whatever the original colonists were, comprises only a small percentage of the population. We have, for years, proudly declared ourselves the great melting pot, and I think that this is the best we will ever come up with: a culture that is simply a wealth of other cultures.
